A day in the life of a Seekers Wild practicum student

After a short but thorough training session with Seekers Wild, you wake up and get ready for the best practicum in the universe. You do whatever you need to do get ready: yoga, meditate, stretch, workout, or just drink coffee. Then you pack your day bag with a lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen, your favorite knife (if so desired), raingear, etc.

7:45 am- We meet at the drop-off/pick-up location to talk over the day’s plan (weather, activities, goals, hazards, etc.).
8:00 am- Kids start to show up…this is where you shine.
8 to 8:30 am- Check-in- You utilize the kid wrangling, goofy, creative, storyteller skills you have, or are trying to develop, to engage the kids while the Lead Instructor checks the kids in and covers pertinent info with the parents. This is when the Assistant Instructor is the hero. You get a chance to build rapport with the kids and set both the tone of the day as well as the kids’ and parents’ expectations. Envision utilizing activities such as reading from (relevant) books, age appropriate circle up/camp-like games, puzzles, etc. We can train you on these and give you a viable toolbox.
8:30 am to 4:00 pm- Transport and Programming- Once all the kids are there and checked in, we’ve made sure they all have a lunch, water bottle, sunscreen, etc. we load up a van and transport to various natural areas for programming. During transport, it is great if you can engage the kids at some level to keep the driver from distraction. Once we arrive we hike, have snack, do some skill building activities, have lunch, some more activities and then hike back out to transport back to the pick-up location.
4:00 to 4:30 pm- Check-out-  We are back at the original drop-off/pick-up point and this is basically a mirror of check-in. You engage the kids, while the Lead checks the kids out and communicates any remarkable happenings from the day. Any debriefing activity is perfect for this time to bring it all full circle. Once all the kids are checked out to the appropriate and safe adult, we can debrief and head home.
