Winter Medicine Making: Cottonwood Bud Salve and other Remedies

Cottonwood buds, often called Balm of Gilead, are one of most magical and effective medicinal plants. Cold winter days often bring dreams of warming spring and summer days so we can get outside and shake off our hibernation blues. We would never think of harvesting edibles or medicinals this time of year. Fret not seekers of learning and life for the populus family starts the bounty of spring early.

Late Winter to early spring, the Cottonwood tree buds start to ooze medicinal sap that we will harness in the form of salve. We will go out, harvest the cottonwood buds and take you through the process of making medicine from it and other herbs. And yes, you will get to sample some herbal remedies and take your finished product home with you!

The Experience:
  • Harvest and process wild medicinal herbs.
  • Cover the ethical, legal, and safety considerations of these herbs and medicines.
  • Make and taste test various medicines/remedies from wild plants.
  • Take home your finished product!
